We were standing in his garage in Dayton going through his tool chest after his wife passed, and he picked up a saw that had maybe a quarter inch of blade left and said the wood doesn't care how long you take, it only cares where your hand was when you stopped, which hit me different now that I'm the one training a kid who keeps asking how fast he should be.
Watched a buddy of mine go through the same thing with his kid last summer. The boy wanted to know how many cuts per hour he should be making and my friend just handed him a plane and walked off. Kid was mad for about a week. Then one day he comes in the house holding a board, grinning, because he finally got one to sit flat with no gaps. Took him four hours. My buddy says that grin is the whole reason he never gave him a number.
