The old guy who showed me a pencil trick, still use it 12 years later

Back in 2011 I was helping out at a shop in Wichita for a summer. There was this older guy, must have been 70, who had been building cabinets since the 60s. One day I was marking hinge locations with a tape measure and a square, taking forever. He walked over, grabbed a pencil, and just held it up against the door edge, spun it around, and left a line. Said, "Your thumb is your ruler, kid." He showed me how to use the pencil width to set reveal gaps, too. Saved me maybe 20 minutes a door on that whole job. I still mark reveals that way on every face frame. Has anyone else picked up some weird trick from an old timer that just stuck?
