TIL the chapel pews I saw in Santa Fe were built by a guy with no thumbs
Stopped in Santa Fe last month and ducked into the Loreto Chapel to see that famous spiral staircase. What got me was the pews, all hand cut, no nails, and the docent said a local carpenter built them in the 1870s after losing both thumbs in a mill accident. I crouched down and looked at the joinery for maybe 15 minutes, and the dovetails were tighter than stuff I cut with a jig and a router. Made me feel like I have been overcomplicating half my drawer boxes. Anybody here ever tried cutting joints without a marker or a square to lean on?
