I finally got my own bucket truck after 6 years of cramming ladders in a hatchback
Three weeks ago I picked up a used 2005 bucket truck with 180k miles for $11,500 and did my first solo aerial drop in Waco without asking anybody for a ladder hand. The boom controls felt stiff at first but after greasing the pivot points it runs smooth, and not having to drag a 28 foot extension ladder off the roof rack has already saved me at least 40 minutes a day. For the folks who went from ground work to a bucket, how long did it take before you stopped second guessing your outrigger placement on soft lawns?

Took me about 2 years before I stopped hopping out to check the pads twice on every setup. What really sped it up was keeping a couple of 2x12 boards in the bed so I always have something under the outriggers no matter what the lawn looks like. Once you know you've got good spread under there, the second guessing fades a lot faster. Soft ground after rain is still the one that gets me though, I'll walk the whole truck around and poke at the dirt with my boot before I trust it. Also worth noting your boom gets way less forgiving on a slope than a ladder ever was, so if the spot feels weird, just move the truck. No shame in it, beats watching a tire sink while you're 30 feet up lol.
