A guy in Spokane showed me the lighter fluid trick for frozen focus rings on old Takumars
Had a 50 year old Takumar come in with a focus ring so stiff it would not budge. I soaked it in alcohol, tried heat, nothing worked. Old timer at the shop in Spokane said to put two drops of lighter fluid in the helix gap and work it slow for 20 minutes. Ring freed up smooth as new and I did not have to pull the whole thing apart. Anyone else using solvent tricks like this or am I late to the party?
Read about this on a repair forum years ago but never tried it myself. The old guys called it the "lighter fluid flush" and swore by it for stiff helicals. Word of warning though, it can wash out whatever grease is left in there, so the ring might free up now but get crunchy again in a few months. Still beats tearing down a Takumar if you just need it working.
