A retired Nikon tech told me my calibration routine was backwards
He said I was chasing the lens when I should be checking the mount first, and after swapping that $15 shim on a 50mm f/1.8, the focus ring finally felt right, so has anyone else run into a fix that was way simpler than the thing you were adjusting?

Shims fix collimation, but most people never check if their lens is actually sharp wide open before blaming focus.
