I thought only expensive gear worked, but a cousin's quick hack showed me otherwise.

At a birthday party, he used a toothpick to align a lens element perfectly. Now I appreciate simple fixes just as much.

Oof, @betty_coleman, I've done similar things... at least the lens still takes pictures, right?

Tell me which lens it was. How did the toothpick trick actually work, like what part was loose?

It was my Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens. The focus ring had a small gap that made it loose, so I jammed a bit of toothpick in there to stop the wobble. I saw the tip online and gave it a try, but I totally pushed the toothpick too deep. Now my lens has a permanent wooden accessory, which is perfect for someone who once tried to fix a tripod with duct tape. I'm just glad it still takes pictures despite my messy fix!
