I was at the antique market in Springfield and saw a guy trying to fix a Kodak Retina with a pair of pliers

It was a real cringe moment. He was just trying to force the film advance lever, and I could hear the gears grinding from three stalls away. I used to think those old folders were too simple to mess up, but seeing that changed my mind. It convinced me even the 'simple' jobs need the right tools. What's the most basic tool you think every repairer should have on hand, even for a quick look?

That "right tools" idea is overrated sometimes. I've fixed plenty of things with whatever was in my pocket, a paperclip or a coin. People get too hung up on having the perfect gear.

Sure, if we're counting stripped screw heads as a valid repair method. My old point-and-shoot is basically held together with prayer and a bent house key at this point. It works, but it looks like it lost a fight with a very angry badger.

My old boss swore by a JIS screwdriver set.

That part about "even the simple jobs need the right tools" is so true. I read a repair blog once that said the most basic tool is just a set of good screwdrivers with the right tips. Not just any old ones, but ones that fit perfectly so you don't strip the screws. It seems obvious, but watching that guy with the pliers shows how people skip it. Using the wrong driver is almost as bad as using pliers, you just ruin the head instead of the gears. It's the first thing I check before I even open a camera now.
