Got a $2,400 raise after asking for $500. Did I mess up by lowballing myself?
I finally worked up the nerve to ask for a raise at my job in Denver after doing the work of two people since January. I went in ready to accept anything, and when my boss said "what number were you thinking," I panicked and said $500. She came back two days later with $2,400, which is way more than I asked for, and now I can't stop wondering if I left money on the table by aiming low. My friend says getting more than you asked for means you won and I should drop it. Others say the number you name sets the whole range and I should have asked for way more. So which is it, did I win here or did I just show my boss I don't know my own worth?
