Hit my 1,000th job lead record, turns out only 7% of my wins come from referrals
I keep a simple spreadsheet of every lead that comes in and where it came from. Last Friday I crossed lead number 1,000 after about 5 years in outside sales. I always assumed referrals were doing the heavy lifting since everyone talks about them being the golden ticket. But when I finally sorted the data, only 71 of my 240 closed deals actually came from referrals. Cold calls and repeat customers were way ahead. It surprised me because I put so much energy into asking for referrals. Has anyone else tracked their actual source breakdown and found something that flipped their assumption like that?
That 7% number has to sting after five years of grinding on referrals. I can relate to the letdown of finally looking at real numbers and seeing something you believed for years fall apart. It takes guts to even sort through 1,000 leads like that, most people just go off gut feelings forever. Your data shows cold calls and repeat business doing the work while referrals get all the hype, which is probably true for a lot of us. Sorry the golden ticket turned out to be more like a scratch off, but at least now you know where to put your time.
