Question about that $180 resume writer I paid back in 2012
Back when I was stuck in a dead end job at a hardware store in Akron, I dropped $180 on a resume writing service that a guy at my church swore by. I was making $11 an hour and that money was basically my whole grocery budget for two weeks, so it stung. The lady rewrote everything in these weird fancy phrases that did not sound like me at all, and I remember one line said I was a "results driven professional" when really I just stocked shelves and helped old guys find screws. I sent that thing out to like 20 places and got zero calls, which made me feel like a total idiot for spending that cash. A month later I got frustrated and just typed up my own plain version on a library computer, no fancy words, just what I actually did every day. That plain one got me three interviews in a week and eventually the warehouse gig I still have now. I still wonder if I just got a bad writer or if those services are always kind of a waste. Did paying for a resume ever actually work out for you, or did you have better luck doing it yourself?
