TIL a $95 magnetic stud finder saved me from drilling into a main water line in a 1920s house
Spent $95 on a magnetic stud finder last year after my cheap $20 one kept giving false hits on old plaster walls. Two weeks ago I was hanging cabinets in a house near downtown and it picked up a copper pipe hiding right where I was about to send a 3 inch screw. Curious if anyone here has a stud finder they actually trust on lathe and plaster, or do you all just knock and pray like I used to?

Someone told me magnets only catch nails in the lath, so they miss copper pipe completely.
