Guy in Bakersfield asked me to stretch a room over wet concrete, and I still think about walking away
Three weeks back I walked a job in Bakersfield, a little rental turnover off Chester Ave, and the landlord had just poured a concrete patch the day before. I ran a moisture test twice and both times the reading was through the roof, so I told him the pad needed at least a week to dry before I would touch it. He waved me off and said the previous guy stretched right over wet spots all the time and never had a callback. I packed my tools and left, and he got somebody else who did it for $350 less. Six days later the tack strip let go along the whole back wall and the seams opened up like a zipper. So what do you all do when a customer pushes you to install over wet concrete, walk or write it into the invoice?
Writing it into the invoice only covers you so far. The landlord signs it, the floor still fails, and guess whose name gets dragged through the mud when the tenant complains? Paperwork protects your wallet but not your reputation. Those demand letters and bad reviews show up fast, and they never mention the signed waiver. Taking the walk like you did is the only move that keeps your name clean. Let the cheap guy keep the $350 and the callback.
