My old boss in Fresno told me I stretch carpet wrong, and I've been doing it his way for 6 years now
I ran into the guy who trained me back when I was 19 at a supply house in Fresno last Tuesday, first time I've seen him in maybe 8 years. We got to talking about power stretchers and he asked if I still do that thing where I get the carpet tight in the middle first, then work my way to the walls. I said yeah, that's how he taught me, and he just laughed and said he was wrong about that whole approach. He told me he switched to running the stretcher from one wall straight across to the other, all the way through, and his seams stopped popping loose on the big commercial jobs. I tried it on a 40 yard stretch of berber in a rental unit the next day and I'll be honest, it felt weird the whole time, but the seam rows laid down flatter than anything I've done in a while. Now I'm second guessing 6 years of muscle memory and wondering if I've been overworking myself for no reason. Has anyone else switched up their stretching order after years of doing it one way, and did it actually make a difference on seams long term?
