Pulled 80 yards of berber out of a house in Boise last month and found the tack strip nailed straight into concrete
Last month I got called to redo a basement in Boise where the last guy just shot tack strip right through the pad into the slab with a ramset. Every strip was loose by the time I got there and the carpet had ripples you could trip on across the whole 40 foot room. I ended up drilling and plugging 60 holes with tapcons before I could even lay new strip. What's your go to when you hit tack strip that's got no wood to bite into?
60 holes with tapcons is the right call and I would take it one step further. Once you are drilling and plugging anyway, skip the strip entirely and glue down a plywood sleeper every 16 inches, then screw the strip to that. It costs you maybe an extra hour on a 40 foot room but the strip has real wood to bite and it never works loose again even if the slab sweats. I have also used 1x3 furring strips glued with PL and tapconned, same idea, less cutting. The ramset guys do it because it is fast and cheap and they are gone before the ripples show up.
