Quick-set mud in a pump on a Tuesday, what a mess

Found my old spiral notebook from my first writer's group in Portland last weekend. It had 40 prompts, all the classic ones like "write about a door" and "what's in your pocket." Reading through them, I noticed how much I used to overthink every single one, trying to make each story twisty and clever. These days I just pick a prompt and write the first boring thing that comes to mind, and somehow it works better. The group back then had 12 people who all wanted to be the next big thing, and now I just want to finish a 10 page story without hating it.
