Shoutout to the old school guys who taught me to stretch carpet dry

I was trained to stretch carpet dry for years, but after a job in Phoenix where the heat made the backing brittle, I switched to a light mist from a spray bottle first. It made the fibers so much more flexible and saved a seam from pulling. Anyone else make that switch after a bad experience?

Watched a buddy fight a dry stretch on a sun baked jute backer. Heard a sickening rip from the next room. Whole section tore like paper. He started carrying a spray bottle after that. Says a quick mist lets the fibers give before the backing does.

Got trained the same way and stuck with it. A dry stretch gives you a true pull without hiding any slack with moisture. Adding water, even a mist, can lead to shrinkage later when it dries out, especially with certain backings. Seen too many callbacks where a seam pucked up a month later. In that Phoenix heat, I'd just work faster in smaller sections.

So which backings shrink the most after a mist?
