The laser level I mocked turned out to be a lifesaver on a curved stair runner
I spent 12 years doing stairs by eye and chalk lines, and I told every apprentice that lasers were for guys who couldn't measure. Then last month I got a job in Fresno with a curved staircase and a runner that had to line up perfectly with a pattern. My chalk line kept slipping on the radius, and after three failed attempts I borrowed my buddy's rotary laser just to shut him up. That thing had the pattern aligned in 20 minutes flat, no redoes, and the homeowner tipped me an extra $100. I still think most gadgets are junk, but I'll admit this one earned its spot in my van. Has anyone else found a tool they swore off that actually came through on a weird job?

Back in 2017 I swore off those auto-leveling plumb lasers after one kept giving me false readings on a rough-in. But last summer I had to run a drain line at this weird angle through an old foundation and my string level was useless. Borrowed the same kind of laser just to prove a point, and it had my slope dead nuts in ten minutes. Now it sits in my truck next to my tape measurer, and I only bust it out for the jobs that actually need it. Funny how the stuff you hate most can turn into your secret weapon on the right day.

A buddy of mine had the exact same thing happen with a laser level and a retaining wall. He swore it was junk after it lied to him on a patio job back in 2019, so he tossed it in a drawer and forgot about it. Then this spring he had to set a bunch of posts for a deck on a hill that sloped two ways at once, and his bubble level just would not work. He dug that laser out, half mad about it, and it nailed the angles in like five minutes flat. He told me he felt dumb for hating it for so long, but now it's his go-to for anything with a weird slope. Funny how a tool can go from enemy to best friend just because you finally give it the right job.
