My old boss at the fire hall said I was too nice on the phone with late payers, so I started doing this one thing
Last year I was doing some side work as a handyman and had a client in Tacoma sit on a $1,200 invoice for almost 60 days. My old captain at the fire station overheard me leave what he called a 'nice guy voicemail' and told me point blank that I was giving them an out by saying 'no rush, whenever you get a chance.' I switched to one sentence: 'This is due Friday and I need to know your plan.' No apologies, no small talk. First call after that change, the guy paid within 3 hours. The trick is not to be rude, just be clear about the date and ask for a yes or no. It felt weird for about 2 weeks but now I do it every single time and my average wait went from 45 days to 11. Has anyone else had someone call them out for being too soft on the phone, and what exact words did you switch to?
