That one client who always emails 'check is in the mail' but it never shows up for 6 weeks
I finally started screen-shotting those emails and sending them back with the date circled as proof after a guy in Denver pulled that line three times in a row on a $1,200 job last fall, has anyone else run into the same pattern and figured out a way to call it out without sounding like a jerk?

Ask how often that tracking number trick actually works on repeat offenders.

Oh definitely, asking for a tracking number right there is gold, I learned that one the hard way after too many empty promises.

...and that Denver guy probably still has your invoice sitting in a pile on his desk with three other freelancers' bills. I started adding a "confirmation of payment date" line to my contracts now, where they initial that they'll pay within 15 days or I charge a late fee. It's not perfect but it makes them think twice before pulling that "check's in the mail" stunt again. Also, I've found that asking for a tracking number right there in the email reply shuts down the bluff pretty quick because they can't fake that.
