My brother-in-law thinks he's a sous chef when he visits for dinner

He barges into my kitchen and starts rearranging my prep bowls. I told him the mise en place is set for a reason. Now he's mixed my chopped herbs with the minced garlic. I have to start over because the flavors are all wrong.

My mom's lentil soup simmers for an hour with the garlic and herbs all in from the start. The flavors blend together perfectly instead of getting ruined. Maybe your brother in law has a method that just works differently.

My grandma always said garlic needs its own time in the pan, or it gets bitter. Mixing it with herbs way too early can ruin both flavors. Read something similar in an old cookbook about timing being as important as the ingredients. Your brother in law might mean well, but he is messing with the whole cooking process.

Sometimes mixing flavors early actually works out fine.
