Dropped $300 on a magnetic sweep cover, best tool decision I've made in ages
Last month I was working a job in a big old Victorian out in Oak Park and kept losing soot down the back of my neck every time I angled the brush wrong. A guy I ran into at the supply house told me about these magnetic covers that hook right onto the flue opening to catch the crumbs. Cost me $300 and honestly I figured it'd be a gimmick, but after three sweeps now I haven't had a single mess on the floor or on me. Anyone else tried one, or do you still just lay down a tarp and pray?
How does the cover handle creosote buildup though? That stuff is way heavier and stickier than soot. I only ask because on a cold flue the creosote flakes can break off in chunks and I wonder if the magnet holds when you've got a pile of that junk pressing down on it. $300 is real money and I'd want to know it works on the nasty jobs too, not just light soot. If the seal is good enough for that, then yeah, it probably pays for itself in one season of not scrubbing floors.
