I was talking to a fire inspector in my town about creosote buildup

He mentioned that a lot of the chimney fires he sees start from a single, thick glaze layer, not just fluffy soot. It made me check my own sweep logs more carefully for that specific type of deposit. Anyone have a preferred method for dealing with that really hard, shiny creosote?

That glaze is actually called third-degree creosote.

I thought it was just tar until last winter.

So what's the actual removal method for that third-degree stuff?
