Picked the rotary brush over the flat wire one for a creosote job in Dayton, and I'm glad I did
Got called out to a place near Dayton last week where the guy had been burning green wood all winter, and the flue was caked with stage 2 creosote about a quarter inch thick. I stood there in the driveway with both brushes in my hands trying to decide, and I went with the rotary because the flat wire just skims the surface on stuff that hard. Took me about 90 minutes with the rotary on a drill, and it came off in dark flakes instead of smearing like I was worried about. Curious if you guys reach for the flat wire first on lighter glaze or just go straight to the rotary every time.
I saw a guy on a sweepers forum say he hits stage 2 with the rotary every time and only pulls out the flat wire when it's just light soot or a thin glaze. He said the flat wire just glazes over when the creosote is thick and hard, basically polishes it instead of cutting it. Your dark flakes result matches what he described, so that tracks. For light glaze I'd probably still start with the flat wire just to save setup time with the drill, then swap if it's not biting. But once it's a quarter inch and crunchy like yours, rotary all day.
