Debt collectors helped me get paid where my contracts failed

Had a client in Marietta ghost me on a $3,400 tree removal job last fall. I had a signed estimate and everything, but he just stopped answering texts after the work was done. Small claims court seemed like a hassle for the amount. So I tried using a debt collection service that specializes in small business invoices, not the big scary ones. They sent a few letters and made some calls, and I got paid in full within 3 weeks. Has anyone else used third party collectors for smaller jobs like this? I hear some guys say it ruins relationships, but the relationship was already dead anyway.

Why does nobody talk about using ice cubes for under-eye prep before a facial

I was working on this client in Portland last week and she had crazy puffiness under her eyes, nothing I tried was helping. On a whim I grabbed two ice cubes from the break room freezer and wrapped them in a paper towel, then gently ran them under her eyes for like 30 seconds each before starting the facial. The difference was night and day - the skin looked so much tighter and the product absorbed way better. Has anyone else tried this or do you have a better trick for stubborn under-eye swelling?

The local coworking space here kicked me out for taking phone calls at my desk downtown

I get that some places want it quiet, but I was literally just talking to a client for maybe 5 minutes. The owner came over and told me to go to the hallway or leave. I don't think that's fair when half the people there are on Slack pinging each other louder than me. Has anyone else had a coworking space get weird about phone calls when it wasn't even in the rules?

Pro tip: thermal pads are not always the answer

I used to think slapping thermal pads on every hot component was a safe bet... until last month when I worked on a gaming laptop from 2019. The VRMs were hitting 110C under load and I figured pads would fix it. Turns out the heatsink had warped just a tiny bit and the pads were too thick, making things worse. I ended up using a thin layer of decent thermal paste on the VRMs instead and the temps dropped 15 degrees. Sometimes the cheaper, simpler fix is actually better than the fancy stuff. Anyone else run into a situation where the obvious fix backfired like that?

That moment I realized I was using too much developer for 10 years

I've been doing hair for about 12 years now and it wasn't until 6 months ago that I figured out I was using way too much developer with my color. A new girl straight out of school named Jess was working next to me at the salon in Nashville and she asked why I was using a full bottle of 20 volume for a root touch up. She said her instructor taught her to measure with a scale instead of just eyeing it. I blew her off at first but then I weighed my color mixture and realized I was using almost double the amount of developer I actually needed. All those years of wasted product and weaker color payoff because I thought more liquid meant better coverage. Has anyone else had a junior stylist or assistant correct something you've been doing wrong forever?

Stopped by an old shop outside of Cleveland yesterday

I was picking up parts at Johnson's Diesel down in Elyria and noticed they still had a box of the old mechanical injection pumps sitting on the shelf, the ones nobody touches anymore. The younger guys there didn't even know how to set the timing on one without a computer. Has anyone else seen shops holding onto old parts that are basically museum pieces now?

That one time my forge weld failed on a customer's axe

Last week I was finishing up a rehafted splitting axe for a guy in town. I did a forge weld on the eye like I always do, but it failed after the first heat treat cycle. The weld just popped apart at the seam. I had to start over with a fresh billet and weld it again, this time using a higher forge temp around 2350 degrees and more flux. I think I rushed the first one because I was trying to get it done before the weekend. Has anyone else had a weld fail after years of doing it the same way?

Warning: Stop quenching your hot steel in that old motor oil bucket

I see people doing this all the time at hammer-ins and in home shops, and it drives me nuts. That used motor oil you got for free from the garage is full of metal shavings, dirt, and who knows what else. When you quench a hot piece of steel in it, those impurities get baked onto the surface and can cause uneven hardening or even micro-cracks. I learned this the hard way after I made a set of tongs that snapped clean in half after the first real use. Switched to a dedicated canola oil bath three months ago and my heat treats have been way more consistent. Has anyone else run into trouble using recycled oil for quenching?

Watched a guy at a shop in Phoenix fix a quarter panel with no filler

Stopped in at my buddy's shop in Phoenix last month. Some old timer was working on a Chevelle. He pulled the whole quarter with a slide hammer and torch, no body filler at all. I always used filler to smooth things out. Watched him for 20 minutes. Metal was straight when he was done. Made me rethink how much filler I've been using. Anyone else seen this done?

That one week where I binged all of Gintama in 7 days

Last month I had a really bad cold and was stuck on my couch for a full week. I decided to finally watch Gintama from episode 1 after a friend kept bugging me about it. Ended up watching almost 100 episodes in that week alone and my throat hurt from laughing so hard while sick. The humor is so random and wild it actually made being stuck at home way more fun. Has anyone else had a show completely turn around a terrible week like that?
