Vent: dropped $180 on a used rotary chimney brush kit and it chewed up a flue liner in 20 minutes
I picked up this kit off a guy in Dayton last Tuesday because my old flat wire brush was worn out and I figured a rotary would save me time on a two story colonial. First chimney went fine, but the second had a clay liner with a hairline crack I missed during the camera check, and the spinning bristles caught the edge and opened it up into a real problem. Now the homeowner is looking at $2,400 for a reline and I'm out the $180 plus eating part of that bill to keep the account. I should have run the camera twice, once cold and once after warming the flue, before touching it with anything spinning. What do you all do for liner checks before you switch tools, do you always scope it twice or just once and trust it?
That flue crack knew you were coming before you did, which is basically how every one of my "quick jobs" goes. Scope it twice, once cold and once hot, because clay loves to hide its surprises until something starts spinning.
