Vent: my old boss swore by top-down sweeping, and a 1940s bungalow in Dayton proved him wrong
I worked under a guy for 3 seasons who always brushed from the top down, said pulling soot toward you just makes a bigger mess on the floor. Last week I got called to a bungalow in Dayton where the flue had a shelf of creosote about 2 inches deep, and top-down just pushed it around and barely touched the glazed stuff on the sides. I switched to bottom-up with my 8 inch poly brush and the whole thing came loose in maybe 20 minutes, way faster than the old way would have. Now I'm second guessing his rule, but maybe he was working with different flues back then. Anyone else switch methods based on the liner, or do you stick to one way no matter what?
