Changed my mind on asking for 50% upfront, spent $600 learning why
I used to think asking for half the money upfront made me look desperate, so I built a whole logo and brand kit for a bakery in Austin on nothing but a handshake. He went quiet after I sent the third draft, and I mean gone, phone off, emails bouncing, the whole thing. That was $600 of my time down the drain over 5 weeks. Now I take 50% before I open the design file, and I have not been burned once in 8 months. Has anyone had a client push back hard on the deposit, and what did you say to keep the job?
phone off, emails bouncing" is brutal, been there with a guy who owed me for two weeks of work and then his "business partner" swore he'd never heard of me. Now I just tell clients the deposit is what covers my bills while I work on their stuff, and if that scares them off, they were never gonna pay the other half either. The ones who get weird about a deposit are usually the same ones who get weird about paying at all.
