I thought a 50% deposit would scare off ghosters, then a guy from Cincinnati proved me wrong
I started asking for half up front about a year ago after getting burned on a $2,800 logo job where the guy just vanished. I was so sure the deposit would filter out the flaky people. Then this guy from Cincinnati hired me for a website build, paid the $1,500 deposit same day, sent me all his content, and we had two good calls. After that, nothing. No reply to emails, no answer on his cell, just gone. That was 11 weeks ago. Turns out a deposit does not mean someone will stick around, it just means they were serious for about a week. Now I am wondering if smaller milestone payments would have kept him on the hook longer. Has anyone switched to weekly or milestone billing and seen fewer people disappear mid job?
