Rant: a client in Austin flat out told me my update emails were too long, and it fixed my whole ghosting problem
Back when I started freelancing around 2019, I used to send these huge update emails, like 6 paragraphs with every little thing I did that week, thinking it showed how hard I was working. Then a guy in Austin I was doing web work for went quiet on me for 11 days mid project, and when he finally surfaced he said, and I still remember this, 'honestly I stopped opening your emails, they felt like homework.' That stung but he was not wrong. So I started sending 3 line updates instead, just what got done, what is next, and one clear thing I need from them with a date attached. The ghosting stuff dropped off a ton after that, maybe 2 or 3 clients went dark in the next two yrs instead of like half of them. People just want to know you are alive and what they owe you, not read a novel. Now I always end with something like 'reply by Friday or I will keep going on X' so there is a real reason to answer. Anyone else switch up their check in style and see clients actually respond more?
