My mechanic in Dallas showed me the invoice and I realized I'd been undercharging for 2 years
I was picking up my truck at Ray's shop on Greenville Ave last month and he handed me a $1,400 bill for a job that took him 6 hours. That's $233 an hour, and I sat there doing math on my own rates while he talked about a fuel pump. I'd been charging $45 an hour for the same kind of work because I felt weird asking for more. How do you guys bring up a rate hike with people who've been with you since you started?
$45 is INSANE for skilled work. Ray charges what he's worth because his customers need him, not the other way around. You've been handing out discounts for years and those old clients got used to it, that's on you for setting that bar. Send a short letter, new rates start in 30 days, done. Some will leave, the ones who stay respect you more. Stop feeling weird, you're not asking for a favor, you're charging for a service.
