Got ripped a new one by a client over my email tone last Tuesday
A client told me I sounded like a robot in my update emails, said it made her feel like I didn't care about her project. I switched to adding a personal line or two about her business before diving into updates. Has anyone else gotten feedback like that and changed how they communicate?

Ha, "sounded like a robot" - that's basically my entire personality at work. I got told my emails were too "clinical" once, so I started throwing in a "hope the kids are well" or a joke about the weather, and suddenly I'm a people person. It's wild how one tiny line can flip you from a cold machine to a decent human, huh?

Yeah, the "hope the kids are well" trick is a lifesaver honestly. I started doing the same thing after a manager pulled me aside saying I came off "a little cold" in group emails. Throwing in a line about the weekend or asking about someone's vacation plans changed everything. It's dumb how such a small thing makes people think you're suddenly approachable instead of just efficient.

I actually think there's more to it than just a trick or a game. Those small personal touches aren't about faking warmth, they're about acknowledging that work happens between real people with lives outside the office. If someone comes off as robotic, maybe it's not the worst thing to add a human moment into the mix rather than just focusing on efficiency.
