Guy at a diner in Dayton told me to ask for 50% upfront, and I ignored him for 2 months
Two months back I was complaining about a $1,800 website job to a guy named Ray at a diner in Dayton, and he said never start work without half down, but I thought that would scare people off. Fast forward, my last 3 jobs all paid late and one guy still owes me $700 after 6 weeks of excuses. So who's right here, do you make everyone pay half upfront no matter what, or does that just kill your leads?
Ray from the diner sounds like he's been around the block a time or two. That $700 guy stringing you along for 6 weeks is exactly the kind of thing that eats at you at night. I've been burned the same way and it stings worse than just losing the lead would. Half upfront is normal in a lot of trades, so it's not like you're asking for something weird. The folks who bail over it were probably gonna be a pain about paying anyway. You're not wrong for wanting to trust people, but your rent doesn't care about trust.
Tweaking one thing, half upfront is normal in some trades but not all. Depends on the trade honestly. I've seen plenty of guys who just do deposits instead and that works fine too.
