I always answered client texts at 11pm until a $600 website client in Boise called me at 2am about a font color
I used to think being reachable all hours made me look professional, and I bragged about my 4 minute reply time like it was a good thing. Then a client in Boise called me at 2am because he wanted the blue on his site 'a little warmer,' and I actually got up and changed it. That was the moment it clicked that I wasn't running my business, his random mood swings were. Anyone else had to put up a firm 'no calls after 6pm' rule, and did any of your clients push back on it?
Sounds rough but was it really that deep? A 2am call is annoying for sure, but you could have just let it ring and texted back in the morning. One guy in Boise being weird about blue doesn't mean every client is out to ruin your sleep. Lots of clients actually respect normal hours if you just tell them upfront. A simple "I answer texts till 6pm, after that I'll get you in the morning" fixes most of this without any drama.
