Took the $900 deposit over the handshake promise and lost the whole job
Last summer a bakery owner in Portland wanted a full menu redesign and said she'd pay in one lump sum when it was done, no deposit, because we'd "built trust." I went the other way and asked for $900 up front, half the quote, which she agreed to on a Friday. Two days later she texted that the deposit felt like I didn't trust her, and she gave the job to a friend's nephew. I sat with that for a while feeling dumb. Then in March a different client paid a $1,200 deposit and ghosted after one round of changes, and I still had the money and a signed scope. I'm done doing unpaid trust tests, flat out. Do you take the deposit and risk the awkward talk, or take the handshake and risk the whole invoice?
