Everyone here says phone calls are a red flag, but the worst client I ever had sent me 14 emails before we ever talked, and the one guy who called first turned out fine
I keep seeing posts on here saying a client who wants a phone call early is trouble. In my experience it's the opposite. Take this with a grain of salt, I've only been freelancing about 6 years.
Back in March 2023 a guy emailed me 14 times over two days. Each email was a new question. Never once asked to call. I should have seen it. By the time we got on a call in week two the scope had crept from one landing page to a full site with a booking system. He'd say 'just one more small thing' in every email. The project dragged to 11 weeks. He paid, but late, and I lost two other jobs waiting on his replies.
The client I'll never forget was a woman in Boise. She called me on the phone the same day she found my site. Ten minutes, that's all. She told me exactly what she wanted, asked what I charged, and said yes or no right there. Easiest $1,800 I ever made. She paid in 6 days.
So when I see people here telling new folks to dodge anyone who wants a call before signing, I don't buy it. A call tells you way more than a long email thread. You hear how they treat you in real time.
Curious if anyone else has noticed this. What's your worst story from a client who never wanted to talk on the phone?
