The client who paid with a 'marketing package' still makes me laugh

Honestly, back in 2021 I took a $1,200 web design job from a guy who pitched me on 'exposure' and a 6-month 'partnership'. I was new and thought it would lead to big referrals. Now I require 50% upfront and the rest before I hand over the login details. He ghosted me after I finished the homepage, and I never saw a dime or any exposure. Has anyone else gotten burned by the 'we'll pay you in experience' line and found a polite way to shut that down fast?
