My neighbor's offhand comment about AC units made me rethink my whole approach

I was chatting with my neighbor Dave last weekend while we were both out watering our lawns. He mentioned he just had his 15 year old AC unit serviced and the tech told him it was running at 60% efficiency, costing him an extra $80 a month in electricity. That hit different because I've been in HVAC for over a decade and never thought to check my own system's performance since I bought my house 5 years ago. I went out and measured my unit's temperature split the next day turns out it was 12 degrees lower than it should be from a dirty coil and low refrigerant. Dave's simple comment got me to fix my own stuff which will save me around $400 this summer alone. Has anyone else had a random chat like that where someone casually pointed out something obvious you were missing in your own home? Just curious what other little things people overlook.

Funny how that works... you get so used to seeing your own stuff every day you just stop noticing when it's not right. There's something about hearing someone else mention their problem that flips a switch in your brain. Same thing happened to me with my water heater last year when a friend was complaining about theirs and I realized mine was doing the same thing I'd been ignoring for months. Just goes to show sometimes the most useful advice comes from a neighbor shooting the breeze about nothing.

Grab a thermometer and check your AC temp split it takes 2 minutes and tells you everything. I do mine every spring now after that same wake up call. Also swap out your filter monthly during summer not every 3 months like the box says. Dirty filters choke the system just as bad as a low charge. Bet your electric bill drops a lot once that coil is clean and the refrigerant is topped off. Little stuff like that adds up fast.
