I had to pick between slowing my feed or dropping my spindle speed, and my ears made the call
So last Tuesday I'm running this batch of 6061 parts on the old Haas, nothing crazy, just a pocket and a profile cut, and the chips start sounding wrong around part 14. My two options were backing off the feed rate or pulling my spindle speed down, and I sat there for a good five minutes scratching my head because the cycle time matters on this job but so does my sanity. I went with dropping the spindle from 6000 to 4800 rpm and left the feed where it was, mostly because I didn't want to redo all my numbers in the program at 2 in the afternoon. Funny thing is the finish came out cleaner than the first 13 parts and the tool stopped that high pitched singing that was driving me nuts. Only downside is I lost about 40 seconds a part, so the whole run cost me like 25 minutes by the end. My lead guy walked by and said, quote, should have tried that at part 3, which is fair. Now I'm second guessing whether I should just program that speed in from the start on this material, or was I just getting lucky with this one cutter? What do you all lean toward when the sound goes bad, feed or speed?
