My first solo setup on the Bridgeport ran 6 hours and every hole hit within half a thou
I've been running a Bridgeport at this small shop in Akron for about 8 months now and most days I'm just loading parts and hitting cycle start. On Tuesday my lead called in sick and the boss tossed me a print for a spacer plate, 12 holes, two bores, tolerances tighter than anything I've ever touched alone. I spent the first hour just reading the drawing and writing out my sequence on a napkin because I was scared to scrap the only piece of material we had. Setting up the vise and indicating the part took me almost two hours, way longer than it should, but I kept checking and rechecking every edge. When I finally ran it, I brought the first hole in .0004 under and just stood there staring at the indicator. The whole job took me a full 6 hours when the lead does it in 2, but the boss mic'd every hole and every single one was in spec. He didn't say much, just nodded and walked off, which around here is basically a parade. Now I'm wondering how long it took you guys to get your setup times down, because I feel like I'm moving in slow motion compared to everyone else.
Stop stressing about the clock because the guy who runs it in 2 hours has been doing this for years and probably scrapped plenty of parts getting there. Honestly the only number that matters is the one the boss measured, and the fact that you held half a thou solo on your first try says you did it right. Keep checking every edge like you did and the speed will come on its own, rushing is how you turn one good part into a pile of scrap.
