My retired lead hand told me hand files still beat a deburring tool on 4140, and I finally tried it
My old lead hand Ray came by the shop in Wichita last Tuesday, he retired back in 2019 after 31 years on the floor. We got to talking about finishing work and he said he never owned a power deburrer, just a 10 inch mill bastard file and a good stone. I kind of brushed it off, but he pulled a scrap piece of 4140 out of my bin and showed me how a file lays the edge down flat instead of rounding it over. I tried it on the next 40 parts and my chamfer check passed on the first shot instead of the third. The file cuts cooler too, so I am not fighting blue marks on the corners anymore. Now I keep one in my box right next to the spindle wrench. Anybody else still keep files in the rotation or is it all power tools for you now?
