Saw a guy running a 30 hp spindle in a garage off Route 9 and now I feel like a chump
I stopped by a small machine shop outside Poughkeepsie on Saturday to pick up some 6061 drops and the owner had a Haas VF-2 sitting in what used to be a two car garage. He was cutting a batch of 200 aluminum brackets at 8,000 rpm and the finish looked like glass. My old knee mill at home takes me almost 40 minutes per part and he was popping them out in 6. He told me he wired a rotary phase converter himself and runs the whole thing off a 100 amp sub panel. Am I crazy for thinking about ditching my manual setup and hunting for a used VF-2, or is that just a big money pit waiting to happen?
