The 0.001 inch reality check from a bathroom scale

I was calibrating a new probe last Tuesday and used my digital bathroom scale to check a load cell reading, it was off by 12 pounds at 180. That got me thinking, if a $30 consumer scale can drift that much, how often are we trusting our cheap measuring tools without verifying them first? Anyone else ever catch a big error from a small tool you never questioned?
