Learning to code felt like solving puzzles without hints... now with auto-complete, it's almost too easy. What's better for beginners, struggling or sailing through?

I coded without auto-complete at first, which was tough but taught me the basics. Now I use it, but that early work paid off.

My friend tried coding without auto-complete once and just hit a wall immediately.

Could it be that auto-complete is just a fancy crutch for poor memory?

Totally get what you mean. I still remember the basics from muscle memory, but I forget exact method names all the time now. My spelling goes out the window without it, too. Trying to type out something like "getElementById" perfectly from memory is a pain. It definitely fills in the gaps when your brain just blanks on syntax.
