I had a client who kept asking for way more work than we agreed on, so I paid a lawyer to write a solid contract before we started. When they tried to sue me for not doing free extra work, the contract shut it down fast. Honestly, is it worth the upfront cost to get legal help, or do you just use your own templates?

Overheard a new mechanic call a freewheel a 'cassette' and it took me back

I was at the shop counter and a younger guy was explaining a repair to a customer, mixing up the terms for a part that hasn't been common for maybe 20 years. It made me think about how much specific knowledge from the old 5 and 6-speed days is just gone now. What's one piece of old tech or a trick you find yourself explaining to newer folks in the shop?

Why does nobody talk about how long it takes to fix a bad 'work for hire' clause?

I just spent three weeks going back and forth on a single line about who owns the final designs. It was buried in the middle of a standard agreement and almost got past me. Has anyone else had a clause that ate up way more time than it should have?

A regular client in Phoenix offered me a 6 month contract for their site, but the same week I got a referral for a one-off project with a bigger budget in California. I chose the local gig for the steady work, even though the pay was less upfront. It was the right call because the ongoing work covered my bills while I looked for more clients. Has anyone else passed on a bigger payday for more reliable income?

Update: I tried using a drone to map a small dig site near Tucson

We set it up for a basic grid pattern over what we thought was just a surface scatter of pottery pieces. The photos showed clear crop marks in the dirt we couldn't see from the ground, hinting at a bigger structure. Has anyone else had a small tech tool point you toward a much bigger find?

Tried pre-cutting tiles and now I'm a convert

I used to think cutting tiles as I went was the fastest way to work. It felt more direct and less fussy to me. Then I had a job with a lot of small, intricate cuts around doorways. I decided to mark and cut every piece first just to see. Laying them down after was so much faster without all the stopping. The fit was tighter and I had way fewer waste pieces. It's a small thing, but it made the whole day go better. Now I do it on every tile job, no question.
