My neighbor's comment about my morning routine made me pause

I was out on my porch with my usual pour-over, and my neighbor Frank walked by. He said, 'You know, you drink that like it's medicine, not like something you enjoy.' I realized I'd been so focused on hitting the perfect grind size and water temp that I wasn't even tasting it. Now I make a point to just sit for the first three sips without thinking about the process. Has a simple shift like that ever changed your coffee moment?

Ever notice how the best part of a road trip is sometimes just pulling over to look at the view? That's what Frank's comment is about. You can get so focused on the map and the route that you forget to see where you are. I used to do the same thing with my coffee, timing everything like a science project. Now I just let the first cup be messy and drink it while I look out the window. The taste is actually better when you're not trying so hard.

Actually, that focus on the process is what makes it enjoyable for some people. The details and the ritual are the whole point, not just the taste. Turning it into another mindless habit seems like a loss.

Exactly, it's about the whole experience, not just the end result. Rushing through it misses the point of having a moment to slow down. You lose the quiet part of the day that makes it special.

Hold on, I gotta disagree. Sometimes the end result is the whole point. If I just need a fast coffee to wake up, that's a win. The "quiet part of the day" can feel like wasted time when you're already late. I get what rosecarr is saying about the ritual, but turning it into a big production every single time just adds stress. A quick coffee can be its own kind of special, because it gets the job done.
