Should've listened to my dive supervisor about the drysuit zipper trick

My supervisor Tom told me to zip my drysuit with the zipper at a slight angle, not straight up. I figured he was just being old school and ignored it. Third dive of the day in Port Angeles, the zipper bound up mid-chest and I had to abort the whole job because I couldn't seal properly. Cost me a full day's pay and a 2 hour drive back to the shop. Any of you guys got a better way to keep those zippers from catching, or is Tom's method just the standard thing I missed for 6 years?
