Warning: I thought the surface swim before a dive was useless until I hit 40 minutes on a rig job
Last Tuesday I was on a job near Port Fourchon and the supervisor made us do a 25 minute surface swim before we even touched the water. I used to roll my eyes at that stuff because I figured the less time in the water the better. But my dive buddy, who has 18 years in the Gulf, said something simple that stuck with me: he said the swim is not exercise, it is a chance to spot rip currents and check how your body feels before you put a helmet on. That day the swim showed me the current was pushing harder than the report said, and we changed our entry point because of it. I have done 3 dives since then and I feel way less gassed when I actually go down. Has anyone else changed how they treat that pre-dive surface swim?
