Got called to a dental office in Charlotte at 7am and had to decide between pulling the drive or spending 3 hours on a clone
Client called me at 6:45am panicked because their front desk PC would not boot and they had a full day of patients booked. I get there and it is a classic click of death, drive spins up then dies, and my imaging tool can see the partition but it keeps dropping out mid clone. Here is my problem though, I could throw it in the freezer for 20 minutes and try a raw ddrescue which might get me 80 percent of the data or I could just tell them to restore from last night's backup and lose maybe 2 hours of check-ins. I did the freezer thing and got a full image after 4 tries and charged them $450, but my buddy who runs a shop in Raleigh says I am nuts for ever touching a dying drive without a clean room. So where do you draw the line, do you attempt the recovery yourself or refer it out every time and risk losing the client to Geek Squad down the street?
