I bought a $200 'professional' thermal paste kit that performed worse than the $8 tube I keep in my bag.

After testing it on three different CPUs, the expensive paste consistently ran 3-5 degrees Celsius hotter under load, so I'm sticking with the cheap stuff from now on.

Well that's a perfect example of paying for the shiny box and not the stuff inside. Sounds exactly like what @lucashenderson was saying about the fancy car coolant. Sometimes you're just buying a brand's story, not a better product. It's almost funny how often the simple, cheap solution works just as well or better. You'd think for two hundred bucks they could at least match the performance of an eight dollar tube. Guess the lesson is to trust your own tests over the fancy labels.

That reminds me of a friend who swore by some fancy branded coolant for his car. He paid a small fortune for it, but his engine temps actually crept up compared to the generic stuff from the parts store. Sometimes the marketing just gets way ahead of the actual performance.

But does it really matter that much...
